Mayor Wu Visits PIC Interns at Dana-Farber

Last week, PIC summer interns at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute were thrilled to meet a special visitor: Boston Mayor Michelle Wu.

Mayor Wu has made summer jobs a priority in 2024, guaranteeing a job to every BPS student who wanted one as part of her State of the City address. Private sector employers like Dana-Farber were a key part of making this audacious goal a reality.

In her visit, Mayor Wu celebrated Dana-Farber’s commitment to the students – as well as the students themselves. She toured a few hospital departments, guided by students as they explained their roles. The mayor and students alike were all smiles throughout the tour, with the mayor asking about their experiences during the summer and their hopes for the future. At Interpreter Services, Mayor Wu broke into fluent Spanish as she chatted with Vanessa Perez Gomes, a sophomore at Boston Latin School.

Following the tour, the mayor held a meet-and-greet with students and Dana-Farber CEO Dr. Laurie Glimcher. The group discussed the diverse range of roles held by the students and the impact of a healthcare internship. Dr. Glimcher also noted how many interns later become full-time employees, attesting to the quality of the interns’ work. After the chat, the mayor was willing to take a few selfies, much to the students’ delight.

Thank you, Mayor Wu, for your commitment to Boston’s youth. The PIC is proud to partner with the City of Boston and the Mayor’s Office as part of the Mayor’s Summer Jobs Campaign.
